Research Report Music Video


Research Report

To start off, i analysed different music videos to get an understanding of the format of them. what i was looking for was how music videos set out their story and what they include in the music video, for example if they include the performers during the music video or if they have a storyline behind the music. I was also looking at different music videos meanings and how they have related to the music video, for example the meanings behind the lyrics. What i also looked at in music videos was the different camera shots and how they would create effect and get across emotions this was mainly researched through cinematography and the range of different and unique camera angles. I researched different genres of music videos and looked at the conventions of music videos, an example of this would be coldplay's, the scientist and how this is an narrative story so the lyrics would link into the music video.

what i noticed by looking at Coldplays back catouglge of music videos, was that in a main majority of their videos, they had used different shot types and editing effects to make their videos stand out from other music videos in their genre. Alot of the the time their videos are narrative based, but include a small part of performance based in odd sections of the video. their wardrobe for each song varried, depending on the narrative, but they mainly wore casual clothing suiting their genre.

My starting idea changed alot in parts as i was looking more into coldplays back catoulge, the main reason for this would be because of their unique style of video, they never really had the same style of video twice. because of this my idea was based on their previous videos, so i needed to change it, and thats where i looked more into somthing they hadnt done with camera trickery or use something impossible in the video. Also when i looked at the genre conventions, i wanted to try and not use them to make the video even more unique to coldplay.
